East End Angels – Aldwych underground station

Aldwych Underground station is no longer open, but during WW2 it was used as an air raid shelter. In ‘East End Angels’, Winnie, Frankie and Bella hurry to shelter there when the air raid siren goes while they’re at a dance at the nearby Lyceum.

I walked the distance from the Lyceum Theatre to the Strand entrance of Aldwych underground to check how long it would take. The answer being, not long, it took longer to wait to cross the road at the traffic lights than it did to walk the actual distance. Imagining it with less traffic in WW2, and it wouldn’t have taken the characters long to get to safety.

You can find out more about Aldwych station’s role in WW2 here and here.
