Hiding from enemy planes

I always loved listening to my Dad’s tales of his life during wartime, and one of the tales he told was how he and his friends used to have to dive for cover when they were out on their bikes or walking around and an enemy fighter came their way. They’d jump in ditches or hide behind hedges, shelter anywhere they could because sometimes those fighter planes would shoot at any civilians they saw. This inspired what happens to Phylly and Jimmy when the enemy plane spots them on their way back to Catchetts Farm.
