Secrets of the East End Angels – Cafe de Paris

Twenty feet below ground, the Cafe de Paris advertised itself as “the safest and gayest restaurant in town – even in an air raid”, but it was anything but on the fateful night of 8th March, 1941 when two bombs fell down a ventilation shaft and exploded in the basement ballroom. The bandleader, Snakehips Johnson was killed along with other band members and many of those there to enjoy themselves. Winnie and her brother, Harry, go there to celebrate his successful operation on his face and are caught up in the blast. You can find out more about it here and here.
