The spy who wasn’t

The Imperial War Museum in London has a huge archive of material which members of the public can access for research, including items such as photos, diaries, oral histories and letters. I was there doing some research for another story and came across the tale of how some landgirls had caught who they thought was a spy, marching him to a greenhouse and shutting him inside, some keeping guard outside armed with hoes while another went to get the police. The spy turned out to be one of the Free French who was on a training exercise navigating his way back to camp. Such a wonderful tale and I squirrelled it away to use sometime and it was perfect for A Home from Home.
